Welcome to 2024

Hi to you all and Happy New Year. I hope your end of year celebrations were full of joy and happiness.

Sadly, I have been quite distressed at what I have been witnessing around the globe and wonder how you, as teachers handle this with your students.

Our hope is that all children can live in peace and safety and free from ‘hate speech’ that perpetuates hatred and ultimately, violence.

Today in the Australian newspaper (I do read other papers including The Guardian, The Age and the New York Times) there is a disturbing article that states ‘toddlers and pre-schoolers are being taught that Australia was stolen from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’. (Alexi Demetriadi, Natasha Bita, The Australian, January 22nd, 2024).

Whilst I am horrified and dismayed by colonisation and the violence perpetrated on Indigenous people, across the globe, I think the word ‘stolen’ is a very strong word to use with little children and wonder if there is another way to discuss this using different language.

As a result of all this I feel even more strongly about how our goal is to educate children to question, search for truth, practice empathy and THINK for themselves. My hope is that children are given these skills to make the world a better place.

About Bullying

So having gotten that off my chest, on another note and completely and separate to the above, I found a very good article in an online newsletter I subscribe to, called ‘Reasons to Be Cheerful’.
The article focuses on an interesting intervention about bullying. If you are interested in this article but can’t access it from the link please let me know.

Also for those that have ordered materials from us since November 28th I am just reminding you that we will be posting orders out early February. Those ELC’s that have prepaid and waiting for the online Professional Development Course; it will also be launched in early February. We are just going over the modules to ensure they are the best they can be.
