Thank you for helping us to help the environment!

When Winnie and I began our long Ginnie & Pinney journey we talked early on about being a company that was socially responsible.

As we have made more sales we have looked at where we could donate a percentage of our earnings that could help us become that socially responsible company. Two areas came to mind, the environment and animal welfare.

With your support we decided that looking after our environment is high on our list of priorities, so we decided to carbon offset the paper used in our books as a first step. Without protecting ourenvironment, we cannot hope to protect our wildlife.

With this in mind, and with quite a bit of research, we decided to select Greening Australia as the organisation we want to support. We are making a commitment to offset our books by donating to Greening Australia’s plan to restore 300,000 hectares of habitat and 450 million plants by 2030 and which works ‘to return life to landscapes and balance to the natural environment in ways that work for communities, economies and nature’.

Once we made this decision, we contacted Greening Australia to work out how much we needed to donate to support planting one tree. It isn’t so straightforward but the lovely science team there gave us the following information.

This is what they said:

‘The amount of CO2 captured per tree is highly dependent on species and growth conditions and differs across the landscape. Carbon sequestration is also typically measured on a hectare basis, so it’s hard to bring this back to trees accurately. Carbon Neutral adopts a 15 trees per tonne CO2 as a rough rule of thumb, so offsetting a single book @ 2.71kg of CO2 would be less than one tree.’

So Greening Australia estimates that ‘it would be approximately 25 books per tree which is approximately 3 sets and the cost per tree is around $5.

So for all the book sets sold via the Victorian Department of Education and Training’s School Readiness Funding Menu, Ginnie & Pinney Pty Ltd. will donate the value of planting a tree to Greening Australia

In 3,2,1, Here I Come, the friends would not have nearly as much fun if they couldn’t hide behind or in the trees. Do you know that lots of animals, birds and insects also hide in trees? I wonder if you can make a list of all the animals you know that live or hide in trees?

· Look at the trees around you. How many varieties of green do you see in the trees?

· Can you join a tree planting day in your community with the help of your teachers, parents or trusted adult?

· How many different types of trees can you draw?

· Can you count the trees in your park or garden.

· Create a project looking at why trees are vital to our environment.

Here is a little overview of what Greening Australia do, but if you are more interested please visit their website
